400 YEAR OLD ANTIQUE MEDIEVAL GYPSY PENDANT BEAD GIPSY

The migration of Gypsies to Eastern Europe is tied directly to the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Turks invaded from the south driving the non Muslims north. Originally from the Indus Valley, they evolved into a distinct and isolated culture over the three centuries from about 1200-1500 by which time they were firmly established in Europe. The knowledge and mystery which followed in well recorded and few cultures can claim such a colorful history. They were admired, feared and despised all at once. This is a rare gold overlaid pendant from a Gypsy tiara or necklace. The pendant and bead surround date to the 16th century, about 1550-1600. The central medallions date later as the piece was rebuilt about 1800 using the old elements in part. Because of the isolation of the culture, Gypsy items, while rarely on the market, are distinctively identifiable. 50 years ago, it was not uncommon to find items of this age among Gypsy items. The piece was broken up because the center mounts were pure gold, and we were able to buy the pendants and beads. The pendant is just under 2/3” (16.6mm) long and in condition as shown. You probably will never again have a chance to purchase early Gypsy beads or pendants. 9A25
