We
started collecting African Art when genuine items were plentiful and
have enjoyed it, perhaps more than any other collection, because new
information is constantly emerging and it’s fantastic value for your
money. We’ve compared to dealer’s prices on the Internet and are starting our African Art out at about one third of market price.
Much of the tribal art on the
market is not traditional, but made for the trade, whether tourist or
export. Of these, a great deal has been artificially "aged" to emulate
traditional items. We began collecting tribal art over 30 years ago and
bought only from tribal art sales at the top international auction
houses. In those days, much genuine material came out of English family
holdings and old collections such as the Muller and Levinge
collections. Even items from the legendary Pitt-Rivers Collection came
to market and we purchased from all of these as well as others such as
the G. Mennen Williams collection. Our own collection numbers over 1000
pieces and we are now selling all of it.
This figure dates to about 1920 and is an ancestor who would be asked to intervene with the gods on behalf of the living. It is 9 1/4" high, and depicts a standing male with a cylindrical hat. He stands serenely with his foreshortened arms forward and palms facing out in a gesture of supplication. It
would have been kept in a household shrine and would represent one of
the most distinguished members of the family’s deceased as it would be
he, who could most effectively petition the gods. It is particularly well finished and detailed with black paint including clad scarification marks. Condition is as shown with considerable evidence of handling. JZ94 (2) r
