It's been said that Vikings would do anything for beads, but there's something they liked even more-gold. And, what they liked best were gold beads! For auction is a handmade Viking gold bead from York England, dating 866 to 1067 A.D. It is hand hammered over a square mandrel and thus, has a square hole. While very skillfully made, it is hammer finished and not sanded or polished so that no gold be wasted. This bead is 3.2 mm (under 3/16”) diameter. It is as bright as the day it was made, and therefore more pure than 18 ^ gold. Gold, which is less than 18 ^ will tarnish. The Vikings were excellent metallurgists, and could produce gold of exactly the purity that they wanted. Vikings occupied more than half of what is now England until the Norman conquest. Their main industrial center was Jorvik (modern-day York), and it is likely that this bead was produced there. The condition is as shown. If you owned one ancient bead. This is the one! VAA17
